Favorite Period Drama Theme Songs
One of the things that I enjoy while I watch a period drama miniseries or movie is the music. The song that probably stays in your head the longest is the theme song. Since miniseries have more than one episode and the theme song is played at the beginning of each, it is probably the piece of music that we hear the most while watching a miniseries. Here are some of my favorite theme songs:
Pride and Prejudice (1995) Theme
I love this song! It's bouncy, yet smooth flowing. It definately captures the tone of Pride and Prejudice: how it's a light hearted story; there may be a few spots that are more serious, but it comes back to the light tone of the story.
Little Dorrit (2008) Theme
I'm currently taking a piano class, and I've been trying to learn this theme song on my own. It's a sad song, but it sweet at the same time, kind of like how Little Dorrit is: the story has a lot of sad parts to it, but at the same time, Amy is such a sweet character that once we get to the end (SPOILER) we're happy that everything turned out alright for her. (End of Spoiler)
Downton Abbey (2010) Theme
I just can't stop listening to this song! There's just something about it that makes you want to loop the song so it just plays over and over again! It's a very pretty song.
Emma (2009) Theme
This song always makes me feel happy! There's just such a light tone to it and a quick pace. I love it!

Some Tournament Stuff
Just a couple of things about the tournament and some announcements in general.
1. No Review This Week
I've been busy with Easter coming up and since it's getting towards the end of the year with school I've been busy with school too. Next week, however, there will be a review!
2. Some more buttons!
I made a couple of more buttons if you would like to put them on your blog to tell everyone about the Period Drama Hero Tournament. I made an Elizabeth Gaskell button for fans of Elizabeth Gaskell and a Downton Abbey button due to the popularity of Downton Abbey.
To see the other buttons, go to the Period Drama Hero Tournament page!
3. Sneak Peeks of Contestants
During this week before the tournament, every two days, I am going to release a contestant for the tournament. I am only going to release three contestants. Some heroes are pretty obvious that I've included (such as I have them in a button), so I'll try to announce heroes that I haven't already mentioned. So for today, a contestant in the Period Drama Hero Tournament is:
Osborne Hamley from Wives and Daughters
So stay tuned for more contestants being revealed!

The King's Speech Released on DVD today!
The King's Speech was released today, April 19th, on Blu-Ray and DVD. I got my copy today!
I highly recommend this movie! Colin Firth was excellent in this movie! The version that was released today is the original R rated version (for language in two scenes). I don't know if they are going to release the PG-13 version on DVD, which edited out some of the swears.

Review: The Ten Commandments
I remember watching this as a kid. I would sit with my mom and my sister and we would watch this classic movie. This is especially perfect for around Easter time, since at the Last Supper, Jesus was celebrating Passover with his disciples. You can usually find this movie playing on TV around Easter time. This is the perfect time to review this movie since it is getting so close to Easter.

Synopsis
The Ten Commandments follows the story of Moses that was told in the Old Testament of the Bible. In Egypt, the pharaoh decrees a law that says that the male children of the Isrealite slaves must be killed. Yochabel, a slave, puts her new born son in a basket and sends him afloat on the Nile so that he may have a chance at life. The baby is found by Bithiah, the daughter of the pharaoh. Bithiah, a childless widow takes the baby out of the basket, names him Moses, and raises him as her son. Moses grows up in the palace of the pharaoh and becomes a prince of Egypt. When Moses finds out about his heritage and after he kills the master builder to save a slave named Joshua (John Derek), Moses leaves Egypt...
CharactersThere are many well known actors and actresses in this movie. This is one of Charlton Heston's well known roles and he is remembered very well as being Moses. You might also recognize Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo (The Munsters), John Derek, and Yul Brynner (The King and I).

Moses (Charlton Heston) with the stone tablets that have the Ten Commandments written on them. Joshua (John Derek) stands behind him. |
All the actors and actresses acted very well. Charlton Heston was absolutely wonderful as Moses! Could there have been a more suited actor for Moses? I hope that this movie is never remade (which seems to be the Hollywood trend at the moment), because no one could beat Charlton Heston as Moses. I don't think that anyone could (or should) reproduce this movie: all the actors and actresses were so well suited for their roles.

Pharaoh's palace. Next to Pharaoh on his right is Rameses (Yul Brynner), and on his left sitting is Nefretiri (Anne Baxter). |
The costumes varied greatly as far as finery goes. The Israelites obviously would have old clothes that were worn from the work that they did. The Egyptians had new, fancy, very fine clothing. It is hard to compare the two since they are both vastly different. The Egyptian costumes did look nice, though.
Music
The music is very powerful! If you would like to hear samples, I think this is a link to the CD page at Amazon where you can listen to samples.

I highly recommend this movie! It's a definite classic and well worth watching. If you have a chance to watch it on Blu-Ray, watch it! It was remastered very well, indeed! The colors really pop out and are very striking.
The Ten Commandments is available on DVD and Blu-Ray. It runs for 220 minutes.

Plans Being Made for Hero Tournament! Some Questions for you... Banner Page... And a new poll!
Okay, I kind of combined this post into one big mega-post...
I'm currently in the process of making plans for the Hero Tournament. There are going to be more contestants in this tournament than the last one. If anyone would like to nominate someone to be a contestant, I will try to fit them in. I want to keep it less than 50. I have 40 picked out so far, so there are 10 spots available.
Also, I was thinking of adding in a new feature into the tournament: somewhere there will be a bonus poll where you could bring back a contestant (or more than one, I'll have to see how it would work) into the running. What would you think of that?
If you would like to answer these questions, leave a comment!
I also added a banner page for all the banners that I made and put up. I have a list of links at the bottom of the page for other blogs that you can find my banners on. If you added a banner of mine onto your blog and you don't see a link to your blog there, tell me so I can add it.
Oh! There is also a new poll up! Sorry I took so long to post a new regular poll: I had a hard time trying to think one up, but now I have one! The new question is: "What Period Drama TV Series do you like to watch?"
Update: Only 7 spots remain for nominations for the Hero Tournament.
Update: Only 6 spots remain for nominations for the Hero Tournament.
Update 4/12: 5 more to go!
Update 4/13: 4 more!

Review: House of Eliott - Series 1
One of my hobbies is sewing, and I am also interested in the business world; House of Eliott combines both of those aspects. I had never heard about this series before until my mom mentioned it to me and bought it. We would sit down in the evenings to watch a couple of episodes. It was really interesting. I'm not too big of a fan of 1920's fashion, but this series did do 20's fashion justice.
Synopsis
When their father dies, Beatrice (Bea) and Evangeline (Evie) Eliott (Stella Gonet and Louise Lombard) have to find a way to support themselves. Bea is able to get a job working for photographer, Jack Maddox, who becomes a friend of the two sisters. Both Eliott sisters are able to sew and design their own clothes: eventually, they start up their own couture fashion house called the House of Eliott.
Characters
There aren't too many faces that you may easily recognize in House of Eliott. Stella Gonet was in the most recent adaptation of Persuasion as Mrs. Musgrove, and Louise Lombard was on popular show NCIS. Those are the only two that I can think of. The creators of the series are well known, though. This series was created by Eileen Atkins (Deborah Jenkyns in Cranford) and Jean Marsh (Mrs. Ferrars in Sense and Sensibility); these two women were also the same women who created popular 70's series Upstairs Downstairs.
Costumes
Music
I love the theme song and credits song! They are very upbeat pieces and, just a warning, they may get stuck in you head! There are a couple of dance scenes with some nice 20's music. A very good soundtrack, overall.
Overall: 4/5
A very good start to the series. There is one episode where there is a mature scene at the end of it, but it was only in that one episode (Episode 2, specifically). There are some mature topics discussed, but they don't get really graphic, but there are things implied. The costuming is very lovely and the plot lines are very interesting. Each episode continues to the next, similar to a miniseries, but this was a regular TV series. I would recommend this show.
House of Eliott - Series 1 can be purchased on it's own or along with the show's two other seasons in a complete collection. There are twelve, 50 minute episodes on four DVD's.

Of the two sisters, I prefered Bea to Evie. Bea was more sensible than emotional and naive Evie. Since Evie had no mother, Bea had to act as a mother to her (and because of the fact that Bea was much older than Evie). I didn't dislike Evie, but I thought that she was a little too naive at times. It seemed that she was more driven by emotion, while Bea was more driven by what was sensible.
The one character that I really disliked was Penelope Maddox, Jack Maddox's sister. I don't really think she added much to the story other than she was controversial. It seemed like that was her only purpose: to be controversial. She got irritating quickly. If she wasn't in the series, the storyline would have gone on smoothly without her. She seemed to be an unnecessary addition to the show.
Scenery
The scenery is very nice. You can tell that the episodes were not filmed on sound sets. Outdoor scenes take place both in nice London neighborhoods and in poorer neighborhoods. Since House of Eliott takes place in London, there aren't many opportunities to see country scenery. You do occasionally see country scenery, but there are very few scenes of them. The interiors of some of the buildings are also very nice to look at.Costumes

Evie in her party dress |
One of the main aspects of House of Eliott is the costuming, since the show is about fashion. I never was much of a fan of 1920's fashion, but Wow! is it awesome in here! Towards the beginning of the series, Bea and Evie's outfits aren't all that great (since they were poorer), but as the series goes on and they develop their fashion house, the costuming gets better. The costuming is not limited to what the main characters are wearing: there are also fashion shows that show off the collections that the House of Eliott had been working on. It's very interesting to see.

What do you think? eBooks or Printed Books?
For Christmas, I got a Pandigital Novel, a tablet eReader. It came with 100 free classic eBooks and it allows you to surf the internet while you're using it.
As I've explored using it and putting books on it, I kind of like the eBook format, but at the same time I still like having a solid, printed book.
What do you think? Do you like eBooks? Or do you like printed books more? Or do you like both? I like both, personally: I like the solidness of having an actual book, but I also like the portability of having an eReader. I'm kind of caught in the middle!
