Sunday: Favorite Georgian Outfit (What's Your's?) - Period Drama Fashion Week

Today's next post is my favorite Georgian Outfit. Now, I haven't seen many Georgian Era movies, so I'm limited as to my favorite. But the one that stands out to me is:

This dress worn by Anne Howard in The Patriot. I love how it looks! It's very light and pretty and I love the criss-cross on the stomacher. This dress is a dress that I would love to sew one day.

What is your favorite Georgian Outfit? Post about it on your blogs or leave a comment!

Sunday: Movie Costume Highlight: The Patriot - Period Drama Fashion Week

Today's Movie Costume Highlight is The Patriot.

Please note: I have seen parts of The Patriot, but I haven't reviewed it yet. It is a fairly violent movie, so be careful if you watch it on DVD. You may do better content wise if you catch it on TV where a lot of the violent scenes would have been edited out, but still be warned -- even on TV, it earns a TV-14 Rating.

There are some lovely costumes in The Patriot. There are only a few female main characters (though there are some extras): since it is a war movie, most of the main characters are male. But for the few female main characters, there are some very nice costumes.

The British characters are (from what I saw) were all men and all of them wore the usual red coat uniform, while the American soldiers/allies wore blue/navy colors.
Mel Gibson (center) as Benjamin Martin in The Patriot. To the right is Gabriel Martin, played by Heath Ledger.

There was one hat that I have never seen before looking at historical Georgian fashions. And that would be this one:
I don't recall ever seeing a fur hat like this hat worn by Colonel Tavington. If anyone has any more information about this kind of hat during the Revolutionary War, please leave a comment so I can update everyone. I'll of course give you credit.

Next the ladies costumes.

There were only a few women characters, the main ones being Charlotte Selton, Benjamin Martin's sister-in-law, and Anne Howard, who becomes Gabriel Martin's wife later in the movie.

First, let's start with Charlotte. One of my favorite dresses in the movie is the purple dress (okay, I have a few favorite dresses, but this is one of them). It has some nice draping in the back of the dress

Charlotte also had this nice pinkish dress towards the beginning of the movie.

Now that I've gone through a couple of Charlotte's costumes, now it's time to go onto Anne's. Anne also had lovely dresses throughout The Patriot. She had a nice wedding dress on when she married Gabriel Martin (sorry, the only picture I could find that was any good was a side picture). I love the way her hair was done with that little crown. The only thing I'm not fond of in this outfit is the VERY thick choker. But other than that, it was a great outfit.

I also like this outfit (sorry it's in black and white). Here's another picture so you can see the colors:
I kind of like the ruffle that they used for this outfit. And the hat is very nice too!

Also, I love this cap Anne wears!

So that is my movie highlight for the day. Have you seen The Patriot? What were some of your favorite costumes?

The Patriot - Anne's Dress in More Detail

A week ago, I posted details for a dress from The Patriot, except I wish that the pictures had a clearer picture of some of the details. Luckily, with a camera, a Blu-Ray player, and a TV, I was able to get some pictures which, though not the best color, have nice close-ups of the details.

Side View

Closer Details on Stomacher: where the lines
meet, there seems to be a little rose at the
intersection

Sleeves: Looks like there are rows of lace
before the end lace.

Ruffles along neckline: pleated instead of
gathered?

The Patriot - Anne's Dress

This dress from the movie The Patriot particularly strikes me. It was worn by the character Anne Howard in one scene, and I like how it looks.

The criss-cross on the stomacher is absolutely lovely! The draping on the skirt is also particularly interesting. The color contrast is also very nice between the white and light blue. Hmmm... This just may be an up and coming project for me... :-D

Colonial Dress

This Colonial dress I made with the pattern Simplicity 4092. It proved to be a bit of a challenge, but it was able to come together. The dress was made from Baroque satin and was inspired by a dress worn by Charlotte from The Patriot.

You will see three pictures above. The top two pictures are full views of the dress, and the bottom picture is the picture from The Patriot. The dress is made up of two parts: the over dress and the petticoat. The petticoat in the 18th century did not necessarily refer to undergarments, but a visible and necessary part of the dress.

Here is a close up of the bodice (sorry the colors may be a little off). The front of the overdress skirt is pleated. The sleeves have a cuff on them and are decorated with lace.

Here is the back of the overdress. It is secured in the back by a zipper that runs a couple of inches into the skirt. The skirt in the back is gathered.

Here is a close up of the lace. This lace is actually made up of three pieces of lace that are sewn together and then sewn onto the sleeve.

That's my colonial dress. Currently a hat for it is in progress.
