Period Drama Challenge -- February Tag

Old-Fashioned Charm

The Period Drama Challenge continues at Old-Fashioned Charm! So far, I have submitted three reviews (though two of the reviews count as one for The Pallisers). And as the Period Drama Challenge continues, Miss Laurie has put up another tag for February.

Are These Songs the Same Song? (Little Dorrit, Downton Abbey)

Comments are very much appreciated! This has bothered me for months ever since I first watched Downton Abbey. I remembered when I first watched Downton Abbey: my mom and I were on the second episode and this song came on...

The first thing I thought was "Hey! That song is in Little Dorrit!" I could have sworn that it was the same song!

Watch from 0:00 to 0:44

I am asking for your opinion: are these two songs the same? They seem to have the same melody and the same musical instruments. Comments are welcome!

For 11/11/11 at 11:11...

Since today is a "special day", I have a special post today! I am including in this post 11 songs from 11 different period dramas!

1. Pride and Prejudice - Opening Title
Love this theme song. It's so light and bouncy, yet smooth and flowing.

2. Sense and Sensibility - My Father's Favorite
This is such a sweet song! Definitely going to learn this for the piano when I get the skills!

3. Little Dorrit - Theme
Love this theme song too! It's kind of sad, but at the same time it's sweet.

4. Amazing Grace - Amazing Grace (Bagpipes)

The best version of Amazing Grace I've heard! You can't go wrong with Amazing Grace on the bagpipes!

5. The King's Speech - The Rehearsal

Again, another light and bouncy song!

6. Downton Abbey - Suite

There are a number of really good songs from Downton Abbey, but you can't go wrong with the theme song. I could probably listen to this song for hours!

7. The House of Eliott - Theme (Ends at 0:36)

I couldn't find a video with just the song, so this is the first part of the first episode. I never was much of a fan of the 20s, but this song is very 20s-like and very enjoyable and upbeat.

8. Emma - The Ship's Cook

Favorite song in Emma! I loved this dance scene!

9. Persuasion - Moonlight Sonata

This probably comes to mind since I'm trying to learn Moonlight Sonata on the piano (an easy version, though!). Anne plays it so prettily!

10. Lark Rise to Candleford - Theme

Love this theme too! (Gee, I like a lot of theme songs!) This song so describes the show: kind of quirky (in a good way), but sweet at the same time.

11. The Ten Commandments - The Exodus

The soundtrack for The Ten Commandments should definitely be one of the best soundtracks out there! I love the Exodus song: I can imagine the scene in my head as the song is playing (which is an absolutely breathtaking scene).

Happy 11/11/11!

Jane Austen: The Music (Piano Sheet Music)

Last January, I started to learn how to play the piano. I still a beginner, but I'm on the lookout for new sheet music. Yesterday, this came in the mail...

Jane Austen: The Music! It features music from both Pride and Prejudice (1995) and Sense and Sensibility (1995).

I love how for Mr. Collins's theme, it says to play it "Pompously"!

There were also pages talking about the plot of both Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. It kind of irritated me, though, that they were calling Edward "Edward Ferrar". IT'S FERRARS!

But alas! There wasn't a picture for Pride and Prejudice!

The music is a bit advanced for me, so it will be a while before I can play anything (I can only play part of treble cleft for a lot of the songs). But anyone who loved the music in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice and who can play the piano will really enjoy this book. Here are the songs in there (and a good list of songs it is!):

From Sense and Sensibility
Weep You No More, Sad Fountains
A Particular Sum
My Father's Favourite
Patience
All the Delights of the Season
Steam Engine
Willoughby
Excellent Notion
Combe Magna
There is Nothing Lost
The Dreame

and, from Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice (opening theme)
Elizabeth Observed
Canon Collins
The Gardiners
Rosings
Farewell to the Regiment
Pemberley
Thinking About Lizzy
Lydia's Wedding
Double Wedding

Music - Amazing Grace (Bagpipes) from Amazing Grace (2006)

This version of "Amazing Grace" was played at the end of the movie Amazing Grace. It's a very lovely song to hear and it was performed very well. I think this is my favorite rendition of "Amazing Grace" now! Have a listen! The ending is amazing!

If you're interested in watching Amazing Grace, make sure to read my review of it! (I raised the rating that I gave it from 4/5 to 4.5/5)

Favorite Period Drama Theme Songs

One of the things that I enjoy while I watch a period drama miniseries or movie is the music. The song that probably stays in your head the longest is the theme song. Since miniseries have more than one episode and the theme song is played at the beginning of each, it is probably the piece of music that we hear the most while watching a miniseries. Here are some of my favorite theme songs:

Pride and Prejudice (1995) Theme

I love this song! It's bouncy, yet smooth flowing. It definately captures the tone of Pride and Prejudice: how it's a light hearted story; there may be a few spots that are more serious, but it comes back to the light tone of the story.

Little Dorrit (2008) Theme

I'm currently taking a piano class, and I've been trying to learn this theme song on my own. It's a sad song, but it sweet at the same time, kind of like how Little Dorrit is: the story has a lot of sad parts to it, but at the same time, Amy is such a sweet character that once we get to the end (SPOILER) we're happy that everything turned out alright for her. (End of Spoiler)

Downton Abbey (2010) Theme

I just can't stop listening to this song! There's just something about it that makes you want to loop the song so it just plays over and over again! It's a very pretty song.

Emma (2009) Theme

This song always makes me feel happy! There's just such a light tone to it and a quick pace. I love it!
