Period Drama Challenge Finale and Tag

Old-Fashioned Charm
Today marks the end of The Period Drama Challenge at Old-Fashioned Charm. I attempted to watch 12 to 15 new films to be a "Period Drama Fanatic". Sadly, however, I fell short by two films... But I still watched ten new period dramas and earned the title "Period Drama Devotee". Here are the films that I reviewed and links to the reviews (and, of course, feel free to leave comments).

1. The Pallisers (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4)
4. Jane Eyre (1983)
6. Mr. Selfridge (2013)
9. The Inheritance (1997)
10. Little Women (1978)

The Tag of Elevens (Everyone's tagged!)

I've been tagged! You may have noticed that I haven't done many tags recently, but this one I have to give a try at!

I was tagged by Melody of Regency Delight ~Jane Austen, etc.~ in her tag. Thanks for tagging me, Melody!

Rules:
1. You must post eleven facts about yourself.
2. You must also answer the eleven questions the awarder has given you and make up eleven questions for your awardees to answer in turn.
3. Tag eleven fellow bloggers
4. Notify them that you've awarded them
5. No tagging back
6. And the eleven blogs you tag must have less than 200 followers.

Okay, a lot of people seem to be bending the first rule a little bit, so I'm going to do the same. I won't be post 11 facts about myself, but if you're interested, you can look at my previous tags that I've posted about. I'm sure there are more than 11 in past tags.

Tag - Period Drama Fashion Week

To start off Period Drama Fashion Week, I have here a little tag about period drama fashions.
  1. Which costume in all the period dramas you've seen is your favorite (list up to three)?
  2. Which period drama costume vexes you the most (list up to three)?
  3. Which period drama hat or bonnet do you like the best?
  4. What costume would you wear today if we could wear period drama fashions in this day and age?
  5. Do you notice historical inaccuracies in the period dramas you watch or do you just ignore them for the most part?
  6. Pick a period drama character. If you were designing their costumes for a new adaptation (or a new episode), how would you go about designing their costumes?
  7. What's your favorite fashion era? Why?
  8. Which period drama has the best costuming? The not-so-great costuming?

Emma Week Tag

Sorry this is coming a bit late, but the past week at Elinor, Elizabeth, and Emma, Miss Woodhouse had been hosting a Emma Week. Here is the tag for Emma Week!

Did you read the book or watch an adaption first?

I actually watched an adaptation first before reading the book. The first adaptation I watched was the Kate Beckinsale version from 1997, but I felt like I didn't get the story when I first watched it, but after seeing the 1996 version, I understood it a little more. Then I read the book and as I was reading the book was watching the 2009 version on YouTube (before it aired on Masterpiece: Classic).

How many times have you read Emma?
Just once. When I have more time, I may read it again.

Your favorite adaption is?
Definitely the Romola Garai version from 2009. It fully told the story in a way that neither of the 90s version could.

Does Emma’s matchmaking ‘skills’ annoy you?
Yes at first. That was one of the things that annoyed me about Emma at first was that she was so nosy. But then later, I recognized that she meant well and truly wanted to help her neighbors. Now her matchmaking doesn't really annoy me since she meant well.

List three minor characters you like in the story.
Mrs. Weston - She's such a nice character and was a good friend to Emma.

Mr. Weston - Ah, good Mr. Weston! How could anyone dislike him? He's a good husband to Miss Taylor ("Mrs. Weston, Father!"). It's too bad that his son isn't a great.
Jane Fairfax - I like Jane. I think that if Miss Bates hadn't talked so much about her to Emma that Emma and Jane could have been friends. But since Miss Bates constantly talked about Jane's accomplishments, Emma probably felt inadequate compared to Jane and started to dislike her.

Which character is the most annoying of the three? Mrs. Elton, Mr. Elton or Miss Bates?
Well, I like Miss Bates (though she can be a little annoying).

Mr. Elton is fairly annoying, but neither of them are in the same universe as Mrs. Elton!

Mrs. Elton is her own category for annoying-ness! She's loud, manages to force the conversation towards herself, and she's mean!

Have you seen any Emma spinoffs? (meaning modern adaptions like the original story)
No, nor do I have any intention to. I'd much rather see the original than a spinoff.

The perfect sum-up of Mr. Knightley is?
Perfect Gentleman, excellent brother(in-law), noble friend.

Described what you think of Emma herself in three words or less.
Annoying, but Well-intentioned. (Okay, that last word was hyphenated, but you get what I mean)

Harriet Smith receives a proposal from ____?
Robert Martin. ("A farmer? A good match for my intimate friend? It would be a degradation!")

Your most enjoyed scene is?
The scene where Mr. Elton snubs Harriet and Mr. Knightley saves her!

The villain is?
Oooh! A subject of much debate! We have mainly two choices: Mr. Elton and Frank Churchill. We could also say that Emma is her own worst enemy too, but let's not get into that. Frank Churchill does lie and makes Emma believe that he is in love with her, but it seemed like he was between a rock and a hard place and didn't know what to do but lie. And with Mr. Elton, he was after Emma for her money (essentially), marries Miss Augusta Hawkins, and then along with his new wife tries to put down Emma and Harriet. Well, there are stories that have two villains in them; maybe this is one of them.

Jane Fairfax is engaged to be married to ____?
Frank Churchill.

Miss Taylor was Emma’s ____?
Governess, companion, and friend.

God Bless, Miss Elizabeth Bennet

I've Been Tagged! (Everyone who wants to answer tagged!)

Like the title says, I've been tagged! This tag came to me from Elizabeth from The Endless Road and from Charity from Austenitis.

Here are the rules.
1. Post these rules
2. Post 11 random things about yourself (optional)
3. Answer the questions the tagger posted for you in their post.
4. Create 11 new questions for the people you tag to answer.
5. Go to their blog and tell them that they have been tagged.

So, I've posted the rules.

11 Random Things about Myself.

  1. I'm never good about posting random facts about myself.
  2. I enjoy taking nice pictures with my camera I got a few years ago for my birthday.
  3. I tend to dislike most modern books from recent years. Don't get me wrong, there are some I like, but a lot of them that I had to read for school I didn't like at all.
  4. I'm waiting for Downton Abbey: Series 3. (Why hasn't it aired yet?!)
  5. I do enjoy sci-fi movies/TV shows. There are some that are just funny.
  6. I like and dislike computer programming at the same time. Writing out the programs is fun, but when you get to the end and nothing works then it's not fun anymore... (HTML is a little different; it's easier to figure out what's wrong with the HTML code than with a programming language code)
  7. I've been thinking about making "movie posters" as graphics to put up on here. What do you think?
  8. I'm almost at 200 followers! W00t!
  9. I've begun to take an interest in millinery (hat making).
  10. For fabric, I like shopping at Jo-Ann Fabrics (love that they give out lots of coupons!)
  11. I'm currently watching Upstairs, Downstairs; I'm at Series 4 now: will definitely review Series 2 and 3 soon.

Elizabeth's Questions
1. Which to genre do you prefer historical fiction, a regular novel, or fantasy?
If Historical Fiction includes Jane Austen, then historical fiction. If it doesn't and it really is a book written recently that takes place in the past, then a regular novel.

2. How do you feel about all these new E-readers? (nooks, kindles)

I have mixed feelings about them. I have had tablets that do other things besides act as an eReader (like surf the internet, check Facebook, check on my blog, etc.), but neither of them were pure eReaders. On the one hand, if you read through a lot of books or if you travel a lot and don't want to carry all those books, then the eReader may be a good investment. On the other hand, there's nothing like a good physical book that you can actually touch (refer to cartoon above). I also don't like how the eReader has taken out so many good bookstores. I used to enjoy going into Borders, but since they got into the eReader market too late they went out of business. Barnes and Noble may still do okay since they have their Nook station set up in their stores, but I miss the old bookstore chains.

3. Do you play and instrument? If so what instrument?
Years ago, I used to play the flute. I played it for about five years regularly, but got out of the habit. Currently, I am learning how to play the piano.

4. Is there an instrument that you don't play, but wish you could?
Other than I wish to play the piano better than I do now, maybe violin?

5. What are some of your favorite musicians?
I really don't have favorite musicians. I like different kinds of music, but don't specifically have a favorite musician. A lot of the music I listen to are oldies songs (let's face it, most of today's music isn't very good) and some classical or soundtrack music.

6. Do you prefer white chocolate of milk/dark chocolate?
But I like both! But probably milk chocolate, though.

7. What is your favorite month?
May is a pleasant month. It's warm outside without being really hot.

8. If you had the chance to go to 5 countries what countries would they be?
Definitely England. Then maybe Italy. Ireland wouldn't be too bad either. Japan would be interesting. Maybe Tahiti?

9. Are you a country or a city person? Or a little of both?
I live near a city, but I wouldn't want to live deep within a city: far too busy for me. But I wouldn't want to live somewhere too far away from a city. I guess I'm somewhere in the middle, so a little of both.

10. Who is your favorite character from Narnia?
For the record, I've never read any of the Narnia books, but I did see the first two movies (not the third, though). But in the movies, I probably like Peter and Susan the best.

11. What is your favorite kind of cookie?
I love those mint chocolate cookies that Panera sells sometimes!

Charity's Questions

1. What’s your favorite breakfast food?
I order breakfast frequently at restaurants, so I'd have to say two eggs over easy with bacon (or sausage links), toast, and hash browns!
2. What’s your favorite book by Jane Austen?
Pride and Prejudice
3. What’s your favorite period drama?
Well, Pride and Prejudice (1995). Non-Jane Austen period drama, I'd have to say Downton Abbey.
4. What’s your favorite book by a more modern author?
I did like Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton (It's very good, but it's a bit violent)
5. What’s your favorite kind of chip?
Regular, plain potato chips.
6. What’s your favorite fast food restaurant?
If Panera counts as fast food, I'll say Panera. If not, then Panda Express.
7. What’s your favorite classic book not by Jane Austen?
ARGGGH! I really need to read other books! Well, it's probably not my favorite, but I did like The Scarlet Letter. I did like what I read of Little Dorrit, though.
8. What’s your favorite Jane Austen film adaption?
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
9. What’s your favorite movie soundtrack?
I know it's not a movie, but I just can't get enough of the Downton Abbey soundtrack.
10. What’s your favorite place to read?
Somewhere quiet, whether at school or home.
11. What’s your favorite thing to blog about?
I like to review period dramas a lot, but I also enjoy holding blog party.

And if you happened to tag me and I didn't mention you, I'm most sorry. A lot has been going on this week, so I haven't been reading blogs like I ought.

11 New Questions (Warning: Random Questions Ahead)
  1. What do you like to put in a sandwich?
  2. What are your top three favorite eras for period dramas?
  3. What would happen if two characters from two different period dramas (you pick) traded places?
  4. You're stranded on a desert island with a TV and a DVD player. Which movies do you bring to keep yourself entertained.
  5. What are your least favorite secondary characters in period dramas?
  6. Okay, they're often called the best author in all of English Literature. Who's better: Jane Austen or Shakespeare?
  7. Cookies or Brownies?
  8. If you were to rematch couples from books/period dramas so that a lady from one book would marry a man from another period drama, who would you match? (Pick three)
  9. Favorite Period Drama Actor?
  10. Favorite Period Drama Actress?
  11. What's your favorite soup?
And I'll tag anyone who would like to answer these questions!

Happy Birthday Jane Austen (Yet Another Period Drama) - Tag

Note: I meant to publish this during Yet Another Period Drama Blog's Happy Birthday Jane Austen Week, but was unable to. Sorry for the delay.

Yet Another Period Drama Blog

Miss Dashwood from Yet Another Period Drama Blog is holding a Happy Birthday, Jane Austen Week. She has a very lovely tag that I am taking part in.

1 - What was the first JA novel you ever read, and who introduced you to it?
The first Jane Austen book I've ever read was Pride and Prejudice. My mom introduced me to the 1995 miniseries (she had never read the book). I knew I was supposed to read it for school, but one day I found a copy in Borders (oooh! Why did Borders have to close?!) featuring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth from the 1995 miniseries on the cover (in fact, it's pictured above!), so I bought it and read it before I was supposed to read it.

2 - Which is your least favorite JA novel, and why?  (Everybody posts about their favorites... I want to know what's at the bottom of your list!)
I don't dislike any of her books, but probably Persuasion was my least favorite. It didn't have as much satire that other Jane Austen novels have. It was still okay, but just not my favorite. I liked Anne Elliot as a heroine, but I kind of resented Captain Wentworth: he just seemed to purposely cause Anne pain throughout most of the book.

3 - Who do you think is the funniest character JA ever created?

Hmmm... Something to think about...
I would probably pick Henry Tilney for his wit.

For "silly funny", probably Mrs. Jennings: she can get on my nerves a little, but she means well and can be amusing.

4 - Which JA villain[ess] do you love to hate?

I greatly dislike Willoughby from Sense and Sensibility. He truly is a scoundrel!

5 - What's your favorite JA quote?
There are so many! I loved this quote from Sense and Sensibility:

"How soon he had walked himself into the proper resolution, however, how soon an opportunity of exercising it occurred, in what manner he expressed himself, and how he was received, need not be particularly told. This only need be said;—that when they all sat down to table at four o'clock, about three hours after his arrival, he had secured his lady, engaged her mother's consent, and was not only in the rapturous profession of the lover, but, in the reality of reason and truth, one of the happiest of men." (Chapter 49)

Where other authors would have gone into over mushy, romantic language, Jane Austen didn't get into it. She didn't need to rely on the mushy language to tell her story.

6 - If you were to "start" someone on JA, which book would you recommend to them first and why?

Probably Pride and Prejudice, since it is so popular and my favorite. After Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility since you could find similarities between the two.

7 - What is your absolute favorite JA film adaptation and why?

Definitely the 1995 miniseries of Pride and Prejudice, since it was what introduced me to Jane Austen.

8 - If you could authorize a new film adaptation of one of JA's novels, which would it be and why?

Though I haven't finished it (so much to do, so little time to read) or seen any adaptation of it, definitely Mansfield Park. Every other Austen adaptation has at least one adaptation that is good, but not Mansfield Park. Even the new Northanger Abbey is okay, though not perfect. So in short, Mansfield Park then Northanger Abbey.

9 - Which JA character do you most identify with?

Elizabeth Bennet (duh!). In my years of reading, I have never found a character that I have related to more.

10 - If you could have lunch with JA today, what question would you most like to ask her?
"So, what do you think of the books that have been coming out lately?"

11 - Is there any one thing that you think could have been improved upon in one (or all) of JA's books?  What is it and why?

I did wish that there was more satire in Persuasion because that is what I love in Jane's other books, but there wasn't as much in Persuasion.

12 - If you could have lunch with one of JA's characters today, who would it be and why?

Besides Elizabeth Bennet? I wouldn't mind having lunch with Marianne Dashwood: maybe she could help me with the piano? (I could use the help! hehe)

13 - (optional) Why is Miss Dashwood so fond of asking "why"?
"Why?" happens to be a very interesting question, of course! We can always answer what something is, or how something got there, buy "why" really gets to the root of the entire situation!

Austenitis's Blog Birthday Party Tag

The Birthday Blog Party continues at Austenitis with a tag!
1. What month is your birthday?
My birthday is in March
2. What is your birth-stone? (include a picture!)
Aquamarine! Pretty! My favorite color is also blue and this blue is very nice!
3. Have you had a party?
Mostly when I was younger. Now I just prefer an evening with my family.
4. What was your favorite present ever?
Not quite sure... I don't think I can remember. Oh well!
5. Do you know of a flower or plant that blooms in your birth-month?
I had to look this up, but I guess camellias bloom in greenhouses during March. I know it's kind of a stretch, but since it's still cold during March (at least by me), not too much is blooming.
6. (These next two questions…only answer if you’re comfortable with them.) Do you know of anyone famous who you share your birthday with?
Of course not in the same year, but Liza Minnelli, Darryl Strawberry, and James Taylor. And, of course, I don't know to much about any of them other than Liza Minnelli was Judy Garland's daughter, Darryl Strawberry was a baseball player, and James Taylor is a singer. As far as celebrities sharing the exact same birthday in the exact same year as me, I can't think of any.
7. Have you ever met anyone who shared your birthday?
I don't believe so... Not really.
8. What month and day would you love to have your birthday on?
I'm pretty happy that my birthday is on March 12th already, so March 12!
9. Name three things you’d love to receive as a gift.
Money, anything Jane Austen, and probably fabric or patterns for sewing
10. Anything random concerning birthdays (or anything else) that you’d like to mention?
I've got nothing... Sorry!

 God Bless,
 God Bless, Miss Elizabeth Bennet

Sense and Sensibility Week Questions

As I have been saying, Miss Georgiana Darcy is holding a special blog week for Sense and Sensibility! To get everyone involved, there is a little tag with questions about Sense and Sensibility! Here are my answers!

1: When did you first read Sense and Sensibility?  Have you reread it since?  I first read Sense and Sensibility about three years ago. I haven't reread it since, but maybe one day I will.

2: When did you first watch Sense and Sensibility? Which adaptation was it?
Oooh! Not quite sure when I first saw my first adaptation. It must have been a couple of months before I read the book (Yes, I saw the movie before reading the book). I think I saw my first adaptation during the summer and started to read the book in late fall of the same year. My first adaptation was the 1995 movie and I loved it!

3: If you have watched/heard of more than one adaptation which one was your favorite? I've seen both the 1995 movie and the 2008 miniseries. I've seen a couple of minutes of the 1981 version and we own the DVD for the 70s version, but haven't watched it yet, so I can only comment on the 1995 movie and 2008 miniseries. While the 2008 version is closer to the book plotwise, it didn't capture the tone of the book well; while Sense and Sensibility isn't as bright and happy as Pride and Prejudice or Emma, it's not Wuthering Heights either. It's more of a serious book with some humor in it, but not a dark book. The 1995 movie captured the tone a lot better: it was much better lit than the 2008 version.

4: Which three S&S characters drive you crazy?
Willoughby -- He is probably one of the characters I dislike the most. He doesn't take consequences and pretty much got away with his behavior towards Eliza Williams and Marianne. He was mean to Colonel Brandon behind his back and influenced Marianne to think badly of him:
Elinor then heard Willoughby say, in a low voice to Marianne, "There are some people who cannot bear a party of pleasure. Brandon is one of them. He was afraid of catching cold I dare say, and invented this trick for getting out of it. I would lay fifty guineas the letter was of his own writing."
"I have no doubt of it," replied Marianne. (Chapter 13)

Fanny Dashwood - She shows no sensitivity to the Dashwood women when she takes over Norland. Mrs. Dashwood lost a husband, Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret lost a father, they don't get much of an inheritance and they have to find a different home to live in: yet Fanny shows no compassion. Sure, she allows them to stay at Norland for a while, but she didn't try to ease their pain - she just wants them to get out.

Lucy Steele - I hated the way she held her engagement to Edward over Elinor's head. That was the only reason she even mentioned her engagement to Elinor: just to hold it over her head. It was very wrong.

5: Which heroine are you most like: Elinor or Marianne?
I'm probably a mixture of both. I'm not a romantic like Marianne, but I don't keep a stiff upper lip like Elinor all the time. I'm probably have a little more Elinor in me since I tend to use sense rather than sensibility to make decisions.

6: Who would be most enjoyable: (or bearable) Mr. Palmer or Mrs. Palmer?

Maybe Mr. Palmer. You could probably have an intelligent conversation with him. Though if you wanted a laugh, Mrs. Palmer would be okay.

7: What would be your reaction if you saw a re-write of Sense and Sensibility where it was Elinor who married Colonel Brandon?

No! No! No! It's not right! Elinor has to marry Edward and Marianne has to marry Colonel Brandon! End of story! And (like my other bloggers have said) what would become of Edward and Marianne! They can't marry each other!

8: Where does Sense and Sensibility rank in your list of favorite Austen novels?

2nd. It's very close behind Pride and Prejudice. There are so many similarities between Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, they almost go together. They have a lot of things in common.

God Bless,
 God Bless, Miss Elizabeth Bennet

Period Drama Week Tag: Part 4

16. Who are your favourite actors/actresses from period drama?

Colin Firth
He's a great actor! He portrayed the definitive Mr. Darcy in the 1995 miniseries for Pride and Prejudice and also earned his Oscar for his portrayal of King George VI in The King's Speech.

Jennifer Ehle
Loved her as Elizabeth Bennet! She captured the wit and brightness that Jane Austen put into her!

Romola Garai
At first, I wasn't quite sure about her Emma. I thought that she was a little annoying, but then isn't Emma annoying at the beginning of Emma? By the time the miniseries was over, I grew to like Emma (just like when I read the book), and I knew Romola Garai was the best Emma. She also acted very well in Amazing Grace.

17. Do you prefer watching a regular-length movie or a more in-depth mini-series? Why?
I much prefer watching a miniseries. With four or more hours, you get much more of a feel for the characters and their personalities and the story has enough time to develop, which is harder for a regular length movie.

18. What period drama has one of your favorite actors/actresses in it?
Pride and Prejudice
Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. 'Nuff said.

Downton Abbey
Downton Abbey has so many actors and actresses in there that I recognize. Seriously, it's like they took every actor that was in a period drama and casted them in here! Take a look at my review to see the actors and actresses that were in here that were in other period dramas!

19. Which heroine from which movie was your least favorite? Why?
I'll list a couple that aren't on my favorites list.

Nan St. George (The Buccaneers)
I just couldn't take Nan seriously. For the first half of the movie, they show her playing with her sister and friends and they were practically acting like five year olds. Her character also took an immoral route, which I really didn't like. She's just not a very good role model.

Evangeline Eliott (House of Eliott)
I always preferred Evie's sister, Bea, to her since Bea was always much more sensible than Evie. Evie was always emotional and based her decisions on emotion. I kind of like Evie until Season 2 when she came back from Paris. Afterwards, she was portrayed as being more "worldly" (kind of like Laura Timmins, she started to be a know-it-all). Plus, she made some immoral decisions, so I lost respect for her.

Laura Timmins (Lark Rise to Candleford)
I won't say that I always disliked Laura. During the first season of Lark Rise to Candleford, Laura was more innocent and it worked for her. She was just trying to learn how to work in the post office and to do her job right. She continued this way until the fifth episode of Season 2... when she met Fisher Bloom. Suddenly, she wasn't the Laura that I had come to like. Spoiler Then, when Fisher leaves, she spends a couple of episodes moping around about Fisher (understandable: break-ups can be hard). But then when she recovered, End of Spoiler she became this Know-it-all! She started to get a bit irritating. I still like Lark Rise to Candleford, but I definitely would say that Season 1 and 2 were the best seasons. Still, I would say that Lark Rise to Candleford a favorite of mine since Season 1 was so good!

20. Which three period dramas are your least favorite?
In other words, which period dramas that I disliked the most. Here we go! Feel free to disagree, but respect my opinion on this question. This is just my honest opinion.

The Buccaneers (1995)
This is the one that I dislike the most. I can only describe it as horrendous. Besides the very mature, unnecessary scenes and themes, there really wasn't a character that you could relate to much. At least with me (and my mom also noticed it too), I couldn't take any of the girls seriously: they were much too silly for me. I will say that some of the scenery is okay and some of the costumes were okay (though some weren't), but they weren't enough to save this miniseries. It also seemed like at the end, the main characters were either a) unhappy with their lives or b) happy with their lives, but got it through rotten means.

Middlemarch (1994)
I felt that the whole thing was pretty boring... Plus even after five hours, I still didn't know who half the characters were (which, after five hours, you should not only recognize them, but really know them well). Content wise, it wasn't nearly as bad as The Buccaneers (though there was one scene that you may want to skip). But the whole thing came off as very dull.

A Christmas Carol (2009)
Two words: Jim Carrey. Okay, right from the movie poster, you could tell what kind of a movie it was, but Jim Carrey didn't help. I know there are a lot of people who really like Jim Carrey (though I never really did) and in certain roles, his hyper acting can be useful, but it really didn't work here. I mean, at the end when Scrooge was overjoyed, it wasn't Scrooge at all -- it was just Jim Carrey... Plus there were moments that resembled The Lord of the Rings than A Christmas Carol and there were costuming issues in the flashbacks (I know, I'm criticizing a animated movie on costuming, but it wouldn't be that hard to draw in/animate historically correct costuming). I can't say that a young child would enjoy it -- there are moments that would be too frightening for young children (hey, it was almost a little much for me!). My suggestion: watch another version of A Christmas Carol...

And that is all of the questions! Thanks for reading!
