Now, I've seen a couple of period drama TV series.
- Downton Abbey
- The Duchess of Duke Street
- The Grand (I don't recommend this series)
- The House of Eliott
- Lark Rise to Candleford
- Upstairs, Downstairs (Original Series) (In Progress)
I've noticed that generally I like the first series of a period drama TV series the best and I tend to find that any series after that falls short. I'm not quite sure what it is. Maybe the show at the beginning of the series, essentially, in it's purest form -- uncorrupted by popularity or the writers writing in order to keep the show popular. Then maybe after the first series when the show becomes more popular and the writers try to top themselves to keep the show popular, the the show plots become a little unnatural and not as good as the episodes that made the show popular in the first place.
The only show that I've noticed the seasons getting better as the show went on is Upstairs, Downstairs. You really had to work through the first two series of Upstairs, Downstairs in order to make it to the good seasons. Maybe for Upstairs, Downstairs, since there were a couple of dislikable characters during the first couple of series, by the time Series 3 came around, they were weeded out and written out of the show.
But getting to the poll. Again, I have two polls for you to vote on. In the first poll, I ask you:
Do you agree that generally the first/earlier seasons of a period drama TV series are better than later seasons? (Yes or No)
And also, I ask:
Generally, which series of a period drama TV show do you think is the best? (1st Series, Middle Series, Final Series)
The polls are up now for voting. Go and vote!
If you would like to discuss the polls, feel free to leave a comment here!
God Bless,
It's not just with period dramas, but this seems to be a general rule with other sorts of tv-series as well, that the first series (or first few series) are the best. The storylines are still fresh, you have all the new characters you can get to know etc.
