Would Catherine Morland Read Jane Eyre? (Vote in Poll!)

Sorry this poll is a day late. I've had very limited access to the computer in the past couple of days, so I haven't been able to work on Elegance of Fashion all that much (a little here and there, but not much). That should be over now and I'll be back to updating and what not.

Now, onto the poll!

Here is the newest question that I post to you and quite the interesting question too. We know that Charlotte Bronte was not fond of Jane Austen's books (namely Pride and Prejudice), but she wrote Jane Eyre, which would be considered a Gothic Romance, something that Northanger Abbey's Catherine Morland enjoyed reading.

For most of Northanger Abbey, Gothic Novels were about 95% of what Catherine was thinking about (okay, maybe an exaggeration, but you get my point). She read The Mysteries of Udolpho a lot and absolutely wanted to know what was behind "the black veil" (read my post on it if you wish to know!). But what if Jane Eyre was available in Regency England? Would Catherine have picked it up after finishing other horrid novels?

Jane Eyre is a novel that is filled with mystery. If Catherine were to read it, instead of wondering what was behind the black veil, would she wonder who was laughing in the middle of the night at Thornfield? Would she view Mr. Rochester as a Montoni character and be angered that Jane ended up marrying him? Would Catherine have fun comparing it to Udolpho? Or would she find that Jane Eyre failed to live up to her expectations after reading Udolpho?

So, for this poll, I'm including two polls. First, do you think Northanger Abbey's Catherine Morland would have read Jane Eyre? And secondly, do you think she would have enjoyed it?

I can't wait to see what you all think!

 God Bless,
God Bless, Miss Elizabeth Bennet

  1. I think she would have been intrigued by the novel at first, and would have picked it up to read it, but I think she may have been a bit disappointed with the character of Jane. Jane isn't really the dashing, dramatic heroine that Catherine was used to reading about. She is sensible. And at times Catherine Morland was not exactly sensible.... :)

  2. I think she would have read it but would have been disappointed with Jane's character because she isn't the type of heroine that Catherine would have read about, the ones that would faint all the time.
