Quick Question

Hey Everyone,
I just have a quick question for everyone out there. How often do you use pinking shears? Or do you use them at all? I use them, but I'm not quite sure if they really help me with my fabric when I sew. I know they are supposed to keep the fabric from fraying, but is it simply easier to use regular sewing scissors? Comments would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

  1. I use pinking shears on curved edges instead of clipping it with regular scissors. It's a lot quicker and easier, and looks nicer, I think.
I don't use them on straight edges though; I use my serger or a zigzag stitch to finish those.

  2. I (ahem) have never heard of those. :) We just use a pair of scissors that is specifically designated for cloth!
On a side note...I have a blog now! It's mostly for photography. Please note that it is still under vast construction, so. :)

  3. Using pinking shears helps when finishing or neatening seam allowances. The bias cut of the shears prevents the edges from fraying as much as a straight cut using conventional scissors - it will still fray (especially if you are using the garment regularly and washing in our modern day washing machines) - however if the garment will be worn lightly and washed carefully 0 then pinking shears can be a good alternative to other forms of neatening because the seams sit flatter.
(and Elinor Dashwood's use around curved corners is a good idea - it does look nicer and works really well)

  4. Thank you everyone! I've been wondering this for quite some time.

    Charity U,
I saw a little while ago that you've started a blog. I joined it when I saw it. It's a very nice blog! You take great pictures!

  5. Yes, I should have remembered that you were a follower! I'm really not happy yet with the way the pictures are coming out (something is not right?), but hopefully I'll get that resolved. :) And btw, I'm so glad you're following!

  6. Charity U,
I think your pictures are very nice. I love the butterfly one, the one with the bug in mid-flight, and the one of the sky and the trees. Have you recently started taking pictures?

Thanks! I'm glad that you're following my blog too! :-)

  7. No, I've been taking pictures avidly for about a year now (I average over 150 a month) but didn't have a blog until mid-November or so. I'm glad you like it!
