Favorite Period Drama Theme Songs

One of the things that I enjoy while I watch a period drama miniseries or movie is the music. The song that probably stays in your head the longest is the theme song. Since miniseries have more than one episode and the theme song is played at the beginning of each, it is probably the piece of music that we hear the most while watching a miniseries. Here are some of my favorite theme songs:

Pride and Prejudice (1995) Theme

I love this song! It's bouncy, yet smooth flowing. It definately captures the tone of Pride and Prejudice: how it's a light hearted story; there may be a few spots that are more serious, but it comes back to the light tone of the story.

Little Dorrit (2008) Theme

I'm currently taking a piano class, and I've been trying to learn this theme song on my own. It's a sad song, but it sweet at the same time, kind of like how Little Dorrit is: the story has a lot of sad parts to it, but at the same time, Amy is such a sweet character that once we get to the end (SPOILER) we're happy that everything turned out alright for her. (End of Spoiler)

Downton Abbey (2010) Theme

I just can't stop listening to this song! There's just something about it that makes you want to loop the song so it just plays over and over again! It's a very pretty song.

Emma (2009) Theme

This song always makes me feel happy! There's just such a light tone to it and a quick pace. I love it!

What would you think of occasional posts like this with some nice period drama music in them? Leave a comment!

  1. I've just heard the P&P one and the Emma one...but they are pretty much my two favorite pieces of music. I still need to see the other movies...someday! Fun post. :)

  5. I know exactly what you mean about Emma theme making one feel happy; it does that to me, too! The P&P one does sometimes as well. And I like the Little Dorrit music (and I like playing it on the piano!)

Ever since I can remember I've been an ardent fan of the music from Anne of Green Gables. (Have you seen that? The 1st and 2nd one [after that they don't follow the books] have been favorites of mine ever since I was...oh, 4 or something.)

  6. Melody,

Not even the 2nd AoGG really follows the book, does it? I enjoy the movies, but I have to watch them as if they're their own story, not connected with Anne of Green Gables. It's weird...I rather wish they'd come out with ones that follow the books. :P

  7. Charity,
Have you read the books? Yes, they got most the things for Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (or Anne of Avonlea if it's put out by Disney) from the books. The thing is, they were combining Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, AND Anne of Windy Poplars. There was their problem - so it's sort of a mixture of circumstances (and even characters) from all 3. (For instance, the rude things that Gilbert said about Anne's book was not said by him in the book - it was an old man who lives alone [unless you count his parrot] and Anne goes to visit him. They also gave some of his character to Rachel Lynde with the cow thing.)

The 3rd and now 4th ones they totally made up...TOTALLY (I haven't even seen the 4th, but I've heard enough about it for me not to draw near it. haha)

Sorry for the long comment, everyone. ;)

  8. I love the Little Dorrit theme; I've also tried to pick it out on the piano. Emma is absolutely lovely, and Downton Abbey got stuck in my head for about three weeks after watching it.

I'd love some period drama themes!
